It is a new year, a new season and as we kick (or is it shoot) off the first SARPL event for the year, there was an excitement in the air for what is coming!

The first event was held at Paintball City in Germiston and on arrival players were getting ready for the day.  The new SARPL PSP bunkers was standing ready and looking smart on the tournament field at Paintball City.

After all the admin mumbo jumbo the first game started, a bit late, but we quickly caught up with the time because players worked together, bunkers stayed inflated and good marshalling helped move the games on swiftly.

At 12:40 the prelims for Div 4 and Div 3 ended and we took a well-deserved lunch break before we jumped into the quarters, semi’s and finals.

Congratulations to the following teams in their respective divisions:

Thank you also to Marco and his team of marshalls that did a superb job at marshalling the games during the day.  The games went smoothly and the overall feeling from players was that the calls was fair and consistent throughout the day.

Thank you also to our premier supporters The Paintball Shop Centurion and Planet Eclipse for your continued support throughout the year!

Thank you Rockstar Energy Drink for keeping the energy levels high during the day and giving players and marshalls that well deserved energy boost they needed to get through the day!

Make sure you book early to get your team in for the new year.

It is early Saturday morning 26 Nov 2011 and everything was packed the previous evening to be ready for the SARPL 3-man Event 6 at Nova Paintball Field in Pretoria.  After arriving at the field just after 6:30am we start with the setting up of the organizing area, the spitbraai and the Rockstar gazebo.

Teams were already buzzing from early morning getting everything ready for the start of the event.  The bunkers went up and players walked the field working out final strategies for the day.

Rockstar After getting everyone together discussing the day and handing out Rockstar Energy Drinks, sponsored by Rockstar, to each player to make sure the energy levels stay up the event started with the prelim rounds.  Teams played in 3 brackets with 5 teams per bracket.  Each team played against the 4 teams in their bracket which was seeded according to their current standings for the year.  Teams with the highest standings was seeded at the top with teams with the lowest standings or who haven’t competed at the event before seeded at the bottom.

After the prelim rounds which lasted until around 2pm we took a well deserved break, before going into the quarter finals.  8 of the 16 teams continued to the quarter finals.  The top 2 teams from each bracket as well as 2 wild card teams went through.  These included Paintjob, Corrosion, Kaotic, Demon Crushers Iglesia, Demon Crushers 2, Revolution, FreeRunners 1 and Fatal Axe.  They continued to compete in a head-to-head knock out round with each other depending on their seeding to see who would continue to the semi finals.

Next up was the semi-finals with Paintjob, Kaotic, Demon Crushers 2 and Revolution pushing on.  Kaotic beat Demon Crushers 2 and Paintjob beat Revolution.  So for the finals Demon Crushers 2 and Revolution had to play it out for 3rd and 4th and Kaotic and Paintjob competed for 1st and 2nd place.

At the end of the day the final standings for the SARPL 3-man Event 6 were:

  1. Kaotic
  2. Paintjob
  3. Revolution
  4. Demon Crushers 2

Kaotic also had the fastest game time of the day which was 27 sec.

After the event we had a quick SARPL Dodgeball event and De Wet Pretorius and Nathan Brown was the only to remain on the field after the 3-min event.  They went head-to-head and De Wet took Nathan out to be crowned the Dodgeball champion for the second time in a row!

As people started to unwind at the end of the day we got everyone together for the award ceremony for the day as well as for the season.

After all the awards, the players, family members and friends was treated to a spitbraai with beef, pork, chicken and a variety of salads and breadrolls.  The potato salad was amazing and people tried their utmost to get a little bit more in their plate.  Thank you to each and every person that assisted in helping to make this day, as well as the spitbraai possible.  A special thank you to Heidi and Daniel Human for assisting with the salads and cutting the meat, Mike and Natalie Dinath making the braaipap and Paul Grobler for organizing the spitbraai, meat and utensils.  Thank you also to Werner Wenhold looking after the spitbraai during the afternoon while the rest of us was still busy with the event.

The day started extremely early for me, because over and above the SARPL 5-man finals happening today it was also the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge and road closures was in affect from early morning which affected players and me coming from the Johannesburg area.

This time I definitely didn’t oversleep and was up just after 5am to see a beautiful sunrise.  We arrived early at Nova Paintball Field to finish setting up the sound and everything else needed for the event.

Players signed in and all players received a water bottle (sponsored by the SARPL, Paintball Shop Centurion and Nova Paintball Field) as well as a promotional SARPL bumper sticker and SARPL pen.  Now no one have to keep on asking me for my pen (what a relieve).

Six teams was ready for action and Valkyrie and Kaotic knew from the start that they had a tough day ahead as they were tied on season scores.

Games ran smoothly, but it was clear that no team was going to go out today with a fight and the paint was flowing while teams kept each other pinned down on a variety interesting and challenging field layout.  The growth in players across the board was noticeable today.

As per most paintball events, doesnt matter where, some good and bad calls was made during the day, but player kept their cool and the level of sportsmanship was evident in the attitude of the players.

At the end of the prelim rounds Demon Crushers Iglesia was in the lead winning 3 games and drawing 1.  On their heels was Valkyrie and Kaotic.  Kaotic and Valkyrie ended against each other in the prelims and ironically enough was the two teams that had to play each other in the semi finals to see who will take 3rd place for the day.

Valkyrie was determined to take go out with a fight and won the semi-finals against Kaotic with a score of 2-0. They then advanced to the finals against Demon Crushers Iglesia.

In the finals Demon Crushers Iglesia gave a good fight, but even though they won them earlier in the day, they could just not get past the determination of Valkyrie to take the 1st.  Valkyrie won the finals against Demon Crushers Iglesia 2-0.

Congratulations to Valkyrie taking 1st in the SARPL 5-man event and also taking 1st for the SARPL 5-man 2011 season.  Demon Crushers Iglesia took 2nd place for the SARPL 5-man event and took 3rd for the SARPL 5-man 2011 season.  Kaotic took 3rd for the SARPL 5-man event and took 2nd for the SARPL 5-man 2011 season.  These top 3 teams will receive their season prizes at the prize giving that will be held on Saturday 26 Nov, straight after the SARPL 3-man Finals.

SARPL
The future of paintball!

What an insane day!  The fact that I got woken up at 6:30am this morning because my alarm didn’t go off at 5:30am was the start to an absolutely hectic, but fun day!  After arriving at Nova Paintball Field at 07:25am (at least not the last person/team to pitch up), but we won’t mention names (cough… Revolution.. cough, cough).

The day started out with players signing indemnities and getting together for a briefing of the day.  The day kicked off slightly late with the first game starting at 08:30am (not 08:00am), but games ran like clock work and the teams played extremely well today, with many games going into a third round to decide on the winner. The new live scoring system worked well and player’s scores throughout the day were tracked perfectly.

Switching over to PSP Rules is a process, but with every event we hold, we are getting better and better at it. The atmosphere and honesty of players during the day was great, and noteworthy as well as calls that were made by marshals were fair.
